Hundreds of thousands of Florida seniors are opening their mailboxes to find an unexpected letter: their Humana Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued for 2027. If you're holding one of these letters right now, take a breath. You have options, you have rights, and you have time β but not a lot of it.
What the Letter Actually Says
Humana is required by CMS to notify affected members by October 1 of the year before plan termination. The letter states your specific plan will no longer be available in your county beginning January 1, 2027. It directs you to find new coverage during AEP which runs October 15 through December 7.
What it may NOT tell you clearly is that you have additional rights beyond simply shopping for a new Medicare Advantage plan.
Your Guaranteed Issue Right
Federal law grants you a Guaranteed Issue right when your Medicare Advantage plan is non-renewed. You can purchase a Medigap plan from any Florida insurer without answering health questions or undergoing medical underwriting.
This is significant. Normally a Medigap insurer can deny you or charge more if you have pre-existing conditions like diabetes, heart disease, COPD, or cancer. During your Guaranteed Issue period they cannot. You have the same rights as a healthy 65-year-old enrolling for the first time.
Your Three Options
Option 1: Enroll in a different Medicare Advantage plan if you're happy with the MA structure but need a new carrier.
Option 2: Return to Original Medicare plus a Part D drug plan for maximum provider flexibility.
Option 3: Return to Original Medicare and purchase Medigap using your Guaranteed Issue right. Most comprehensive option for seniors with ongoing health needs or those who travel.
Your Action Timeline
- Now through September: Research options.
- October 1: Non-renewal letters arrive.
- October 15: Annual Enrollment Period begins.
- December 7: AEP ends. Hard deadline.
- January 1, 2027: Old coverage ends.
Do not wait until December. Best plans fill up. Agents get busy. Your Guaranteed Issue window runs 63 days from when old coverage ends.
How to Find a Replacement Plan
List your current doctors and prescriptions. Compare plans in your specific Florida zip code β plans vary by zip code within counties. You can compare at Medicare.gov or call (435) 612-1009 for free help from a licensed Florida agent.
What Happens If You Do Nothing
If you take no action, CMS will attempt to auto-enroll you in a comparable plan in your area if one is available. However, "comparable" does not mean identical. Your doctors may not be in the new network. Your drug formulary may change. Your out-of-pocket costs may be higher. Do not rely on auto-enrollment β take control of this decision yourself.
Special Considerations for Cancer Patients
If you are currently receiving cancer treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, this situation is particularly urgent. Moffitt is dropping Humana Medicare Advantage beginning July 2026. If you have Humana and are mid-treatment at Moffitt, you need to act immediately β not in October. Contact us at (435) 612-1009 to discuss your continuity of care options.
Get Free Help From a Licensed Florida Agent
You do not need to navigate this alone. A licensed Florida Medicare agent can review your current plan, identify the best replacement options in your specific zip code, and walk you through enrollment at absolutely no cost to you. Agents are compensated by the insurance carriers, not by you.
